Testing the Cyclops Marine 5/16th Smarttune
Ocean Rope were pleased to collaborate with Cyclops Marine to test the new 5/16th Smarttune and the Nano Smartlink onboard our J70. Adam and Tom from Ocean Rope joined Chips Howarth for a some test sails in the UK.
- Direct Replacement for a standard 5/16th rigging screw
- Bluetooth connectivity with smart phones through the Cyclops Marine app
- Devices a precisely calibrated for accurate load measuring
Installation is extremely simple. The 5/16th Smarttune is designed as a direct replacement for a standard 5/16th rigging screw and is identical in height. Simply measure your rake measurement using the usual arc method and tape off the threads or use a set of verniers to measure the distance between the thread. Smarttune can then be installed and wound to the tape marks. Double check your rake measurement again using a tape measure
Once installed, connect to the device via bluetooth and enter the product key provided with every device to connect using the cyclops app. We found this process quick and easy to use.
On the Water
It is a well know that backstay, mainsheet and vang tension are critical trim controls in the J70, affecting sail shape and rig loadings. Using the 5/16th smarttune allows for instant, on the water feedback when adjusting these controls.
Easing the mainsheet too much in the puffs quickly results in excessive forestay sag and loss of pointing. With visual forestay load data, its easy to see when de-power controls are required to reduce mainsheet movement.
As the J70 international class becomes increasingly competitive, data analysis and testing becomes an important part tuning and training. Cyclops Marine products help add great data insights to this process.
During testing we also added the new Nano 0.6t smart link unit to the vang purchase. Although the loading changes were less dramatic than backstay and mainsheet controls, this data added another interesting dynamic to our findings.
Cyclops Marine App
Cyclops marine products can be integrated with NMEA 2000 devices using their separately sold gateway. However the Cyclops Marine app is a free and allows a data readout on smart phones or tablets.
Once your session is finished, data can be exported for use in data analysis software such as Sail Njord
For our testing we used an iPhone with a waterproof case.
Cyclops products may not yet be legal for all classes but is an invaluable training and testing tool
